Rift

One of the most notable geologic features of Þingvellir is Almannagjá, a rift developed by the separation of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. It is walking through this canyon that you come across the Öxará.

Named for the dark of the rocks that tower and tumble through these rifts, this color answers the question “Is it grey? Is it brown?” with “Both.” A color both difficult to describe and photograph, but truly evocative of the landscape.
